THE GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Movie Review

In The Greatest of All Time, the opening sequence sets the tone with Gandhi (played by Vijay), the star agent of India’s Special Anti Terrorism Squad (SATS), on a high-stakes mission in a luxurious hotel in Thailand. Gandhi, along with his partner Kalyan (Prabhudheva), effortlessly retrieves a crucial access card from a girl, making it look almost too easy. But the details of the mission don’t really matter. The real highlight is Gandhi’s daring parachute escape, reminiscent of Batman, followed by his signature bubble-gum-pop and intense stare into the camera. This moment, designed to ignite excitement in theatres, serves the movie's actual mission: delivering crowd-pleasing moments, cameos, and easter eggs crafted by director Venkat Prabhu.

While these high-octane scenes generate cheers, they mask the film’s underlying lack of substance. The plot revolves around Gandhi, a special agent who lost his son during a mission, which destroyed both his personal and professional life. However, his presumed-dead son reappears with a slew of problems, forcing Gandhi to rejoin SATS and face his biggest adversary.

One of the film’s stronger aspects is Vijay’s dual performance as both father and son. The de-aging technology used to portray a younger version of the actor works surprisingly well, delivering impressive results in most scenes. Vijay’s performance elevates the film, as he brings both characters to life convincingly. However, the film suffers from weak writing, dragging its nearly three-hour runtime without enough depth or engaging narrative to sustain interest.

While GOAT has moments of brilliance, especially for fans of Vijay, its lack of a cohesive storyline prevents it from being truly great.
