In The Instigators, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck reunite in a Boston-set heist comedy that doesn’t quite live up to expectations. Directed by Doug Liman, with Affleck co-writing, the film follows Damon’s character Rory, a financially struggling ex-marine battling depression, and Affleck’s Cobby, an ex-con trying to stay sober. The duo is hired by shady local businessmen (played by Michael Stuhlbarg and Alfred Molina) to rob the mayor’s victory party. However, things quickly go wrong when the mayor loses the election, turning the planned heist into chaos.
The film promises action with a big chase scene, but the comedy between the leads feels weak. Damon’s low-energy, subdued performance doesn’t create the sharp dynamic needed for a buddy-heist comedy. Affleck brings more life to the role but can’t entirely salvage the film. Hong Chau’s character, Dr. Rivera, who is central to the plot, doesn’t have enough material to make an impact, and the script doesn’t give her room for comedic moments. While there are some entertaining moments, the film doesn’t generate much excitement or humor, leaving it feeling flat overall.
