Hounds of War Review

Hounds of War is a familiar entry into the action genre, resembling many B-movies in the market today. Starring Frank Grillo, who has become known for playing hardened characters in survival or revenge scenarios, the film is directed by Isaac Florentine, a filmmaker with a track record in low-budget action. His previous works include Seized, Acts of Vengeance, and Close Range. While Hounds of War doesn’t break new ground, it offers an intense look at a troubled mercenary seeking revenge against political forces that have shattered his last hope for happiness. The film prioritizes entertainment over deep storytelling, delivering just enough action and conflict to engage viewers.

Grillo plays Ryder, a mercenary who reunites with his brother Tommy and Tommy’s pregnant wife, Jenna, in Malta. Reluctantly, Ryder agrees to join a covert mission under Colonel Hart (Robert Patrick), who previously failed him during a botched operation in Syria. The mission, meant to take down a warlord, ends in tragedy when Hart betrays the team, killing Tommy and Jenna while failing to eliminate Ryder. After six months in hiding, Ryder emerges with a plan to dismantle the corrupt system by targeting President Lane (Matthew Marsh). Seeking help from his former lover, Selina (Rhona Mitra), a crime boss with access to resources, Ryder sets out on his quest for vengeance.

The film kicks off with a flash-forward to Ryder’s climactic showdown in Malta, immediately spoiling some of the suspense by showing him taking a shot at President Lane. The story then rewinds six months to show how Ryder’s descent into rage began. This structure diminishes the impact of the final confrontation, but the filmmakers seem more focused on grabbing the audience’s attention with a fast-paced opening.

Jean Pierre Magro’s screenplay builds sympathy for Ryder, who is driven by the loss of his family. His bond with Tommy and Jenna makes their deaths feel especially brutal, fueling his quest for revenge. While the film attempts to craft a globe-trotting adventure, it often relies on limited locations, such as the bunker where things go wrong and the nightclub where Selina hides. Despite the constraints, Florentine injects energy into the film with well-choreographed fight scenes, including a standout brawl inside a moving ambulance.

While Hounds of War doesn’t offer groundbreaking performances or a fresh take on the genre, it succeeds in maintaining momentum. Grillo sticks to the tough-guy persona that has become his trademark, while Florentine keeps the action intense. Though the film falls short of being a standout, it offers enough thrills for those in the mood for a straightforward revenge tale. For fans of gritty, no-nonsense action, Hounds of War delivers just enough to keep them entertained.
