"Alien Country" Review
"Alien Country" feels like a heartfelt nod to those classic, family-friendly sci-fi movies with a touch of summer blockbuster energy. It’s ambitious, charming, and full of surprises—ideal for anyone who loves a good, otherworldly adventure.
The story begins with Everly, a young woman hitchhiking with her guitar, hoping for a fresh start. She’s stuck on the side of the road in the small town of Blue River, feeling like she’s going nowhere fast. Recently discovering she’s pregnant, Everly also faces the nerve-wracking task of breaking the news to her boyfriend. Enter Jimmy Walker, a demolition derby driver who stumbles upon a mysterious silver briefcase in the back of his race car—a case that two local crooks left behind in a frantic escape from the police. What’s inside? Well, nothing less than otherworldly contents that will turn their lives upside down.
When Everly and Jimmy open the case, they unknowingly activate a portal to another dimension. And just before it closes, alien critters slip through, setting the stage for chaos in Blue River. Together, Everly, Jimmy, and the rest of the town’s quirky residents must find a way to protect each other and halt the alien invasion.
There's so much to love about Alien Country. With an infectious energy and a nostalgic vibe, it’s clearly made for families. It has the scale and excitement of a blockbuster, yet keeps a genuine indie charm. The alien creatures are creatively designed with a fluorescent glow, bringing to mind the vibe of Attack the Block. However, if you’re in the mood for high-octane gore, you might be let down; most of the action happens off-screen.
This isn’t a movie packed with gore or the typical alien tropes. Instead, it’s just pure fun—a feel-good film with a timeless quality that’ll remind you of the sci-fi gems of the '80s.
