Review: Kung Fu Games (2024)

"Kung Fu Games," a 2024 action thriller directed by Ryan C. Jaeger, takes viewers on a high-stakes journey as five fighters find themselves trapped in an unfamiliar, hostile environment. Written by Jaeger and H. Daniel Gross, the plot revolves around a sadistic game where the fighters must survive deadly martial arts battles to escape. Despite the intriguing premise, the film falls short in its execution, lacking originality and depth.

Plot Summary: The movie kicks off with Sarah Ludlow (Caitlin Dechelle), Mike Fischer (Mark Strange), Maly Wu (Jade Xu), Graham Gunner (Jose Manuel), and Alex Carvalho mysteriously confined in what appears to be a futuristic room. A timer forces them into a foggy forest where they’re ambushed by martial artists. Injured, Alex is carried back to safety, but soon the group is split up, with each fighter sent into a brutal combat scenario.

Meanwhile, on a remote island, Eric Lamb (Matt Goodwin) reunites with his wealthy old friend, Calvin Prince (Lathrop Walker), who turns out to be the mastermind behind the deadly game. Calvin, fueled by greed and a hunger for entertainment, subjects the fighters to life-and-death battles, while Eric initially joins him as a co-moderator. However, as Eric witnesses the true brutality of the game—especially after Maly is killed—he begins to question his role in Calvin’s twisted operation.

The Big Reveal: The fighters eventually learn they are part of a deadly game where wealthy elites place bets on their survival. Graham, a once-successful actor, exposes the scheme, explaining that Calvin profits from the suffering and deaths of the contestants. Despite his doubts, Eric remains entangled in the situation, joining Calvin in overseeing the deadly matches.

Ending: As tensions escalate, Eric turns on Calvin, helping Sarah and Mike attempt an escape. However, Calvin’s game is far from over. The final scene suggests that while Sarah and Mike’s fate is uncertain, Calvin will continue the cycle of violence, with Eric now trapped in the game himself.

A Rehashed Formula: "Kung Fu Games" treads familiar ground, borrowing heavily from popular survival thrillers like Squid Game. The film’s concept—rich men exploiting people for entertainment—feels overdone, with little new insight or thematic substance to set it apart. The characters’ motives and actions often defy logic, and the narrative is riddled with plot holes, leaving viewers frustrated.

Performances: Mark Strange brings intensity to his role, but his performance often feels exaggerated. Jose Manuel portrays a self-absorbed actor, while Caitlin Dechelle plays a hardened fighter, though both roles seem more like imitations of characters we’ve seen in countless other films. Overall, the cast’s performances lack originality and fail to elevate the predictable script.

Final Verdict: "Kung Fu Games" is a disappointing mix of recycled ideas, predictable plot points, and lackluster performances. Despite some solid action sequences, the film doesn’t offer anything fresh or engaging. It’s a missed opportunity, ultimately succumbing to the pitfalls of derivative storytelling.
