Review: Damsel
Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo crafts a spirited adventure that balances gentle feminist undertones with classic action elements. The story brings mature female characters to the forefront, with Robin Wright as a powerful queen, Angela Bassett as Elodie’s pragmatic stepmother, and Shohreh Aghdashloo lending sinister charm as the voice of the dragon. Though Brown’s performance occasionally leans into overly emphatic territory, her transition from dialogue to action is compelling, allowing her to embody the fierce determination of a young woman rejecting the love of a prince in favor of self-reliance.
While Damsel doesn’t fully escape the hallmarks of a Netflix mockbuster, its visually engaging world and strong CGI elevate it beyond standard fare. The dragon is particularly well-rendered, adding flair to the climactic scenes. Though the storyline’s predictability and cave setting can wear thin, Damsel ultimately delivers a satisfying reimagining, infusing a classic tale with a dash of empowerment and a bit of edge. Now streaming on Netflix, it’s a lively choice for younger audiences seeking more than just sugar-coated happily-ever-afters.
