Review: Valentine's Town

For those who can’t get enough of heart-shaped chocolates and Hallmark moments, Valentine’s Town arrives like a daydream come to life. However, beneath its sugary coating, the film presents an array of underdeveloped characters darting across an overstretched plot. With a big-name cast and all the trappings of a date-night blockbuster, it’s clear the movie aims to charm, though the romance and laughs are noticeably lacking.

The story follows florist Reed (Ashton Kutcher) and his best friend Julia (Jennifer Garner), both wrestling with love’s unpredictable twists. Reed’s love life is complicated by a sudden engagement to his ambitious girlfriend (Jessica Alba), while Julia’s infatuated with a doctor (Patrick Dempsey) who may not be all he seems. As each character navigates love and loss, they wind up crossing paths in a manner that feels forced, delivering more predictability than sparks.

Reed’s flower shop functions as the film’s central hub, attracting characters like a smitten fifth-grader, Julia’s unfaithful boyfriend, and Reed’s confidant (George Lopez). As the tangled stories unfold, the script substitutes depth for lighthearted clichés, and Marshall’s direction lacks the momentum to bring these rom-com elements to life. Moments of dramatic tension are minimal, with some bright spots in Jamie Foxx and Topher Grace, who salvage their roles with solid comic timing.

Ultimately, Valentine’s Town serves more as an ode to LA’s flower industry than to love itself. It’s a film filled with superficial charm, glossy LA backdrops, and a cameo-driven plot that rarely delves into genuine connection.
